Which stain needs which approach

The color of the stain decides the treatment. This is the short version.

Organic

Mildew, algae, black roof streaks, pollen, and moss are growth or plant film. Soft washing, with the pressure kept low on paint and shingles, is the usual path. Roofs are never pressure washed.

Mineral

Red clay, iron, rust, fertilizer, copper, and efflorescence are minerals. They need a treatment made for that stain, a test spot, and an honest ceiling on how far they will fade.

Petroleum and paint

Oil, diesel, hydraulic fluid, tar, and spray paint are a third group. Degreaser or a paint test. Old oil in concrete usually ghosts. Some graffiti only fades.
