How I clean it

Metal fence is washed for film and growth. Rust is treated only where a treatment can help, and it is not a powder coat.

What it won't do

Flaking paint and structural rust stay visible. Washing does not weld a gate.

What sticks to metal fences

Aluminum and iron fences collect pollen, road dust, webs and a green film on the bottom rail where the grass stays wet. Sprinklers and red clay leave orange and pink marks on the posts. Chain link holds growth in the weave on the shady side.

How the visit goes

I wash the fence at low pressure with a mix set for the finish, then rinse it. Painted and powder-coated fences get the same care as a painted wall. Plants along the line get watered before and after. If the fence is around a pool, I keep the rinse out of the water.

What I check first

The finish. If paint is flaking or the coating is chalky, a wash will clean it, but it will still look worn.
Rust. Surface rust on a rail can be treated where a treatment helps. Rust that has eaten through is a repair or a replacement.
Gates, hinges and latches. A sagging metal gate is a hardware fix or a fence company, not a wash.

How long it holds

Metal does not soak up water the way wood does, so growth is slower to come back. The shady bottom rail and anything a sprinkler hits come back first.
