Gutter hanger

This is a small exterior fix on a cleaning visit, not a licensed trade, and it is refused when it is plumbing, electrical, or structural.

One pulled hanger or spike on an otherwise sound gutter can be reset after the trough is cleaned, so the weight on it is honest. A strap or a short piece of soft fascia can be part of the same visit.

If the gutter is undersized, the pitch is gone, or the fascia is rotten along the eave, one hanger will not make it last the next storm. That is a gutter company.

What I check

• Whether the hanger pulled out of sound fascia or rotten fascia.
• Whether the gutter still slopes toward the downspout once it is empty.
• Whether the seams near the sag are leaking.

When it is worth it

One sag on an otherwise sound gutter is worth resetting. It keeps water running to the downspout instead of spilling over the face and striping the wall. It fits on the same visit as a gutter cleaning, because an empty gutter shows where it is really pulling.

What I won't touch

Replacing whole runs, new seamless gutters, rehanging a gutter end to end, and rebuilding long stretches of rotten fascia. That is a gutter company or a carpenter.

What to have ready

A photo from the yard of the sagging section and one of the whole run, so I can see if it is one spot or the whole line. Send them here.
